Another Benefit of Oxaloacetate Supplementation: Fighting against Heavy Metal Damage

Published recently by the peer-reviewed scientific publisher Elsevier, in “NEXT”, scientists in an international effort in Japan, Brazil and Pakistan have evaluated the use of oxaloacetate (OAA) for protection against the heavy metals Lead, Mercury, and Arsenic, along with the ability to scavenge H2O2, and oxidizing agent that can cause tissue damage. 

“Arsenic, mercury, and lead are some of the highly toxic elements that have significant adverse effects on human health and environment.”

Unfortunately, many of us are exposed to heavy metals daily in the air, water, and even in some foods.  The authors propose that Oxaloacetate supplementation may be a strategy to help with this exposure.

The research sought to understand how oxaloacetate can provide protection.

“A strong inhibition of lipid peroxidation indicates that OAA can help preserve cell membrane integrity and protect against oxidative damage to lipids, which is crucial for overall cellular health. In the present report, we showed the effective protection of deoxyribose which suggests that OAA can scavenge ROS or prevent oxidative reactions, helping to maintain the stability of DNA-related molecules. OAA also scavenged H2O2, which indicates that OAA can reduce the formation of hydroxyl radicals and other ROS derived from H2O2, contributing to overall antioxidant defense. The DPPH scavenging also suggested that OAA can neutralize a wide range of ROS.”

The research was summarized by the authors:

“In conclusion, our data may provide a comprehensive picture of how OAA exerts its effect. The antioxidant qualities of oxaloacetic acid (OAA) make it a promising dietary supplement that may help reduce oxidative stress and promote general health. OAA scavenges reactive oxygen species and protects cells, making it a potential therapeutic agent for oxidative stress-related diseases, including neurodegenerative disorders. OAA may also be utilized as a co-treatment for heavy metal detoxification because of its capacity to chelate metal ions, which limits the negative effects of toxic metals like lead and mercury by binding and removing them from the body.”
